It is a common struggle, too: the parable of the prodigal son is enduringly popular because so many of us feel compelled to live it for ourselves. It is an old struggle: Augustine wrote those words at the turn of the fifth century. My whole life is an effort to remain keenly aware of the push and pull so as to find the resting place. The things that pull me toward God? They are often difficult and demand more of me than I would like to give, but they bring peace with them, too. The things that push me away from God? They always seem easy and comfortable at first, but they leave me dissatisfied and restless. Here are the things that have led me back to God. Here are the things that have pushed me away from God. ![]() ![]() Saint Augustine famously wrote, in the exquisitely personal voice of The Confessions of Saint Augustine, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” My own life makes the most sense to me when I view it through the lens of this same restless search. ![]()
